Round Table Workshop on Next Generation Networks (NGN)

5th April, 2014 became an auspicious date in the history of Computer Society of India (CSI).  CSI, Delhi Chapter in association with Science & Technology Department, Embassy of France in India and CEFIPRA conducted Round Table Workshop on Next Generation Networks (NGN) and felicitated Shri S. Ramdorai, Vice Chairman, TCS with Life Time Achievement Award at The Theatre, India Habitat Centre (IHC), Lodi Road, New Delhi-110003.

 

The event started with the inaugural of this workshop which started with the floral welcome of the guests. Dr. R. Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Advisor, Govt. of India and Shri J. Satyanarayana, Secretary, DEITY, Govt. of India were the guest of honor. Prof. S. Raghavan, President, Computer Society of India also graced the inaugural of the day-long workshop. Prof. Guy Pujolle, Computer Science Professor at Univ. Of Pierre et Marie Curie was the French Coordinator for the workshop. Dr. Veronique Briquet-Laugier, Science Counsellor Embassy of France in India also graced the inaugural of the workshop with her presence.  Dr. Debapriya Dutta, Director Indo-French Centre for the promotion of Advanced Research, CEFIPRA also graced the workshop with his presence.

 

In her welcome address, Dr. Veronique Briquet-Laugier expressed the need for Indo-French collaboration in order to make Next Generation Networks a reality and useful service for researchers and human kind. She also discussed how the French Embassy in India was providing facilities to promote research on Next Generation Networks. Dr. Debapriya Dutta congratulated CSI for its efforts in bringing together Indo-French experts and realizing the workshop on Next Generation Networks. In his presidential address Prof. S.V. Raghavan, President, CSI welcomed all guests and dignitaries to the workshop. He highlighted the need to develop automated systems to overcome cyber crime. Prof. Guy Pujolle addressed the speakers and raised the challenges and issues of next generation wireless networks. The inaugural address was given by Shri J. Satyanarayana, Secretary, Deity, Govt. of India. He pointed out five dimensions to meet the challenges of the increase in demand of network communication to carry out data collaboration over internet and increase in number of users, Quality of Service, Security Threats and data access speed. Dr. R. Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Advisor, Govt. of India, addressed the audience and conveyed the message regarding main issues of high speed telecommunication network and voice & media traffic.

Following this Mr. Satish Babu, Chairman Awards Committee, CSI felicitated, Shri S. Ramadorai, Vice Chairman, TCS with Life Time Achievement Award- CSI Honor. In his address Shri Ramadorai highlighted how coding at early stages of schooling makes the students easily learn how devices work.

Shri Ramadorai felicitation was followed by memento presentation to all dignitaries and guest of honors who graced the inaugural with their presence. The inaugural was concluded with vote of thanks by Proof. M.N. Hoda, Chairman Division I, CSI.

 

Technical Session I on NGN: Architecture and Technological Trends and Issues in NGN was chaired by Prof. Guy Pujolle. The session marked talks by five distinguished speakers. Prof. Nathalie Mitton, INRIA, France highlighted the new challenges of next generation of wireless ubiquitous networks. In her discussion she discussed INRIA’S project with the applications of wireless networks and how to enhance network performance. The talk was followed up by Prof Guy Pujolle with a very widespread talk on “Internet : Next Generation”. He explained the high speed transfer protocols and internet revolution due to virtualization. The session continued with the talk of Shri S.N.Gupta, Secy General, Forum of India, on “NGN Architecture : The layered approach of IP based Networks” where he introduced the concept of Service control layer. Next Mr. Hemant Kanakia, Walden Funds, elucidated SDN and network virtualization for public data networks. The session ended with the vibrant talk of Prof. O.P.Vyas, IIIT Allahabad, on Architectural Issues and recent advances of NGN.

 

After a delightful lunch break, the seminar continued with Technical session II on Network Infrastructure of Tomorrow, chaired by Prof. Huzur Saran, IIT Delhi. The session marked the presence of two brilliant speakers Mr. Othmen Braham, CTO Virtuor and Prof. Huzur Saran. Mr. Othmen  put forth his views on “Metamophic networks” followed by a talk of Prof. Saran who exemplified  “Software defined networking and its features”.

 

The Technical session III on “Wireless Network and Service Control”, chaired by Prof. Hakima Chaouchi, Director CITT embraced enlightening talks by four distinguished guests. Prof. Hakima made the audience know about heterogeneous wireless networks Synergies. She also presented the work and development carried out by CITT. Next Prof. Ahmed Mehaoua, University Paris-Descartes, gave a clear picture on Wireless Body Area Sensors for HealthCare and discussed about its challenges and future scope. Dr. Ashok Chandra, Wireless Advisor, Govt. Of India (Former), talked about Wireless Communications and Spectrum Requirements. Session winded up with the talk of the last speaker Dr. Vinayak Naik, IIIT Delhi, who presented the details of “Requirements of Wireless Networks for measuring physical analytics of mobile users”.

 

After fifteen minutes of break and rejuvenating high tea all reassembled for the last session - Technical session IV on Digital Services of Tomorrow chaired by Prof. Salim Beg, AMU. The session witnessed two remarkable presentations of Prof. Salim Beg on “Multimedia Transmission over future wireless networks” and Dr. Maninder Singh, Thapar University, Patiala on “Digital Services and applications through NGN”.

 

Drawing curtains to the splendid Round Table workshop on NGN, the concluding session was marked by felicitation of Prof. S. Raghavan, President, CSI by Mr. Anuj Agrawal, Chairman CSI Ghaziabad Chapter. This was followed by memento presentation to faculty of Bharati Vidyapeeth’s Institute of Computer Applications and Management (BVICAM) who organized the event. In his vote of thanks Mr. R.K. Vyas, Regional Vice President, CSI Region I thanked all guests and eminent dignitaries for their presence at this momentous occasion.
